CoTWIN: Collaborative Digital Twins for Smart Mobility

Project Summary

CoTWIN addresses critical challenges in transport data sharing by creating a secure, compliant platform that unlocks real-time insights from vehicles and infrastructure. Led by Lindholmen Science Park, the project integrates cutting-edge telecom, AI, and Confidential Computing to foster sustainable urban mobility solutions. With SEK 2.5 million in funding, CoTWIN empowers industries to monetize data ethically while enhancing road safety and efficiency.

In an era of connected vehicles and IoT, secure data sharing is paramount. CoTWIN demonstrates how sanitized vehicle data can be exposed to third parties driving innovation in smart mobility ecosystems.

By combining Ericsson 5G networks with Volvo’s truck telemetry, the project builds a robust digital infrastructure for AI-optimized transport.

Objectives and Goals

a. Develop a pilot for secure data sharing between road infrastructure and vehicles.
b. Explore business models for real-time data monetization.
c. Support AI-driven solutions for traffic optimization and resource utilization.

Expected outcomes include new competencies in road transport, hackathons for developer engagement, and scalable models for global smart cities.

Innovative Technologies at the Core

At its heart, CoTWIN leverages Confidential Computing via CanaryBit’s Confidential Cloud solutions, ensuring data remains encrypted during processing. 5G-enabled video streams from Volvo trucks validate road signs against city data in real-time, creating dynamic digital twins. This edge-to-cloud architecture minimizes latency while upholding GDPR standards.

Real-World Impact and Use Cases

Imagine a Volvo truck navigating busy streets of Gothenburg: Onboard cameras capture a 40 km/h sign, streaming securely to CanaryBit’s “black box” for instant verification against Gothenburg’s database. This prevents violations, reduces congestion, and informs predictive maintenance—transforming urban logistics.

Latest Updates

In October 2025, CoTWIN partners CanaryBit, Ericsson, and Volvo were selected for Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection’s (IMY) regulatory sandbox, fast-tracking privacy innovations. The project is in full swing, with technical pilots underway.
